LOST IN THE NOISE

January 31 — THE JETSONS (THEME SONG), Hoyt Curtin (1962)

img_1622When Donald Trump fired Sally Q. Yates last night, it was the first time a president had fired an Attorney General since Richard Nixon fired Archibald Cox. It was 1973, and I was 10 years old. Everything I knew about firing someone, I learned from “The Jetsons.” Every episode, without fail, Mr. Spacely would lose his temper, fire George and kick him out the door. As Walter Cronkite delivered the news into our living room that night, I stood up, faced the television, and with all the authority I could muster, screamed, “ARCHIBALD! YOU’RE FIRED!” Dad shushed me. My brother giggled. Nine months later, Nixon’s impeachment hearings started.
