LOST IN THE NOISE

October 15 — ACROSS THE GREAT DIVIDE, Nanci Griffith (1993)

131DF319-6A18-4904-870B-8C0BAC0069BCWe spent our last full day at Yellowstone in grand style, and the Park didn’t disappoint. We made our way to West Thumb, where we hiked in the snow underneath the pines to Duck Lake and drove around the magnificent Yellowstone Lake, geysers in the near view, snow-capped mountains in the distance, blue water in between.

We hit Fishing Bridge, the famous Artists Point at the Yellowstone Grand Canyon, and finished with a coffee for the road from Canyon Village. We saw a bison bull trudging along the road like a wayward hitchhiker. We saw another coyote celebrating its afternoon kill in an open field. We spotted the tracks of elk and raccoons. We had snowball fights in the parking lots, drove toy monster-trucks along snow-packed trails, and lowered the wayback seat for a picnic lunch in the back of the SUV. And waterfalls, mountains, and cold blue skies all around us.

After four days, we feel like we’ve barely scratched the surface. There are 3,000 square miles here, after all. We could easily spend a week here and not get tired of it. And we’ve yet to see a bear or moose. But the Grand Tetons await us tomorrow.
