For my money, Willie Nelson is the quintessential American artist. And “Living in the Promiseland” is an homage to what makes this place special — a place where all people are welcome, and stand a chance at the pursuit of happiness.
“Give us your tired and weak, and we will make them strong. Bring us your foreign songs, and we will sing along. Leave us your broken dreams, we’ll give them time to mend. There’s still a lot of love, living in the promised land.”
In Donald Trump’s world — a place that seeks to build walls, ban travel from Muslim countries, and take affordable healthcare from the poor — he and his supporters would be well served to use this song as a reference point. “The Promised Land,” after all, is a Biblical reference.
