July 1 — WE ALL LOSE ONE ANOTHER, Jason Collett (2005)

IMG_1921When you have an extensive record collection, deciding which album to put on can be as easy as opening the refrigerator door. You just look around until you find something good.

But when you rely on streaming services, as I’ve done the last few years, you use other tricks to get the wheels turning. One is visualizing the very record collections you once had, mentally flipping through the album covers or looking at the shelves. Odd, but it often works.

But it’s impossible to know what the mind’s eye forgets. Like Jason Collett, a Toronto singer-songwriter who has floated around various projects since the late 1990s, including Broken Social Scene. When this song appeared on SiriusXM’s the Loft this morning, it triggered my memory to Collett’s solo album “Idols of Exile,” which held a nice spot for years in my collection. Probably right between Lloyd Cole and John Coltrane.
