June 28 — SHORT SIDE OF NOTHING, Los Lobos (1992)

IMG_1918For years, Oklahoma City has been short on good small- to mid-sized music venues that host national artists. Now, almost overnight, it seems, several new facilities are online. If the last few weeks of booking are any indication, they’re living up to their promise.

The Criterion opened last year in the Steelyard section of Bricktown, hosting the likes of My Morning Jacket, Jason Isbell and the Flamimg Lips.

The Jones Assembly, which abuts the 21C Hotel in Film Row, opens in August with Lake Street Dive. Saint Paul and the Broken Bones have been booked for the fall.

And the Tower Theater, an old movie theater that for years was abandoned and boarded up on 23rd Street, seems to be booking new acts every day, with many of them selling out. The Mavericks are scheduled for the fall, as are Hard Working Americans, Irma Thomas with Blind Boys of Alabama, and Los Lobos.
