I’m not sure how I’ve gotten this far without knowing about Brendan Benson. He’s been recording, writing and producing for more than twenty years, alongside Loretta Lynn, Jason Falkner and Ethan Johns. In the mid-2000s, Benson was a member of the Raconteurs with fellow Detroit native Jack White.
But it was an earlier record this morning that caught my ear, a sunny-bright blast of power pop that first struck me as an overlooked song from Liz Phair. The entire “Lapalco” album is a gem, and there’s much more to explore.
What else has the music universe been keeping from me?
