Every self-respecting rock fan should own a CBGB T-shirt. And now, according to my own rules, I have arrived. While in Omaha overnight I visited Drastic Plastic, a place run by the friendliest punk rockers you’ll ever meet. And I left with a black T-shirt bearing the logo of the New York club that was home to punk and new wave in the 1970s. A notorious, tiny pit, CBGB catapulted the careers of Blondie, the Ramones, Patti Smith and the Talking Heads (“this ain’t no Mudd Club or CBGB, I ain’t got time for that now”). In my own musical world, it’s a venue on par with Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, First Avenue in Minneapolis and the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.
