LOST IN THE NOISE

March 30 — CAN’T HARDLY WAIT, Justin Townes Earle (2009)

IMG_1733The son of Steve Earle and namesake of the late Townes Van Zandt, Justin Townes Earle’s voice sounds exactly like you’d expect: road-weary and tattered, but not torn. It’s in full effect on this reading of one of the Replacements’ finest songs. Accompanied by dobro and fiddle, Earle’s version is more resigned and less desperate than the Replacements’. On Thursday night of an exhausting week, this is the lullaby I’m hearing: “I’ll be home when I’m sleeping. I can’t hardly wait.”
