March 26 — ENGINE JOE, Slobberbone (1997)

IMG_1726This afternoon Lauren, Luke and I went to the Oklahoma City Philharmonic’s “Machines, Motors and Music.” The aim was to introduce kids to classical music with a program centered around cars, planes and machinery. It was an impressive affair, with a full orchestra performing odes to air travel (Wendel’s “Take Flight”), trains (Lumbye’s “Copenhagen Railway Steam Gallop”) and a Beethoven symphony, illustrating his knack for using a machine-like rhythm underneath many of his scores. Naturally, my mind begins curating a rock ‘n roll program of the same theme: Commander Cody’s “Hot Rod Lincoln,” Elvis Presley’s “Mystery Train,” Pink Floyd’s “A New Machine.” And his song. Definitely this song.
