February 26 — FIRST DAY OF MY LIFE, Bright Eyes (2005)

img_1662This morning I perused the “20 Best Folk Albums of All Time” by London-based New Music Express, and instinctively sized it up in several categories: worthy standard bearers (Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Odetta); artists to explore (Bert Jansch, John Martyn), criminally absent (the entire Texas singer-songwriter contingency, most notably Townes Van Zandt; Tracy Chapman’s debut) and welcome re-introductions, including Bright Eyes’ emotionally-direct “I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning,” released when leader Conor Oberst was all of twenty-five.
