LOST IN THE NOISE

February 22 — JOY, Lucinda Williams (1998)

img_1653Chris Shiftlett’s podcast interview with Lucinda Williams occupied me for two walks and a run over the last couple days. They covered a lot of ground — the importance of persistence; the process of songwriting (and re-writing and editing); her first encounters with Steve Earle, Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt; and the crucial role that wonder and humility play in art. Plus, Son Volt has a new record that was inspired by bluesmen Mississippi Fred McDowell and Skip James; and Nikki Lane’s “Highway Queen” album arrived on Friday. I feel a deep dive into American roots music coming on.
