Only Mary Tyler Moore could make Husker Du sound wide-eyed and wistful. Minneapolis is dotted with landmarks of affection for Moore, including a statue downtown and a house on Lake of the Isles used for exterior shots in her 1970s TV show. But her legend was cemented when the hardcore trio Husker Du — who normally, as Billboard says, “welded gorgeous melodies to scraping sonic and despairing lyrics” — recorded her theme song as a B-side. It became a cult-like favorite; in fact, frontman Bob Mould closed his show with it when I saw him in Dallas last fall. Good night, Mary. You made it, after all.
