January 5 — HONEY DON’T, Carl Perkins (1956)

img_1581All rockabilly roads lead back to Carl Perkins. A few days ago, I listened to a fascinating interview with Stray Cats drummer Slim Jim Phantom. It’s easy to think of the Cats as a novelty act — come to think of it, many of the early MTV bands seemed that way — but in truth, the guys had chops; their affection and respect for pioneers like Carl Perkins was real. Meanwhile, the Jerry Lee Lewis biography continues to entertain. It’s mind boggling to think of those sessions at Sun Studios in the ’50s with Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee and Carl Perkins. If there’s one era when the meteor exploded to create rock ‘n roll, it’s there, in Memphis in the mid-’50s.
