December 11 — GENTLE ON MY MIND, Glen Campbell (1967)

img_1496The opening line of yesterday’s song, “Solving Problems,” recalls this jewel from a young Glen Campbell. He hadn’t yet had a big hit when he heard this song by John Hartford, who had written it as a way to capture his mood after seeing “Doctor Zhivago.” Campbell recorded the album under producer Leon Russell, and the title song — along with Jimmy Webb’s “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” — went on to put Campbell on the map. Several others recorded the song, including Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. But no other version captured melancholy like Campbell’s.
