LOST IN THE NOISE

December 9 — PENNIES FROM HEAVEN, Louis Prima (1957)

img_1494A few hundred kids in pajamas at the school gymnasium for the showing of “Elf,” and the technology doesn’t work, so kids are squirming and wrestling, while teachers and parents try to get the crowd to sing Christmas carols, or make up games on the spot, something, anything to distract from the fact that a half-dozen dads and teachers are gathered around the laptop and projector, like men peering under the hood of an old car, and candy canes and popcorn are staring to fly, and parents start dragging their restless kids and their blankets out of the gym, when finally, 45 minute later, the problem is solved and the movie starts. But the best part is over. And it was better than a movie.
