LOST IN THE NOISE

October 5 — BETTER DAYS, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee (1958)

img_1185In the early 1940s, Woody Guthrie played a benefit show in Baltimore, along with Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. Afterward, patrons hosted a private dinner for the performers — but insisted that Terry and McGhee eat in the kitchen. Guthrie threw a fit, knocked over tables, broke china and ultimately got kicked out. As my friend Steve Higgins told an OCCJ crowd tonight, Woody knew that Black Lives Matter. In 2017, OCCJ will reprise a statewide public service campaign, this time with the Woody Guthrie Center, around the theme of “This Machine.”
