October 2 — HAPPY ALL THE TIME, Joseph Spence (1964)

img_1179From David Johansen’s Sunday afternoon radio show comes Bahamian folk artist Joseph Spence. After working as a fisherman, stonemason, carpenter and crop cutter, Spence returned to music, a love he developed as a pastor’s son. His first recordings were made on his front porch. Spence’s guitar playing, accent and idiosyncrasies made for a distinctive sound. You can hear calypso, blues and old-time gospel in his music; Spence played with a steel string guitar and often stomped his foot as percussion.
