August 27 — I KNOW YOU GOT SOUL, Bobby Byrd (1971)

imageAn article in the New York Times chronicles the life and times of Joseph Saddler, aka Gramdmaster Flash, one of three people who could legitimately claim to be the earliest pioneer of rap. The article covers street parties in the Bronx, with DJ’s mixing turntables and talking into the mic to mimic the beat. One of Saddler’s first DJ’ing gigs was as a kid at a school dance in Poughkeepie, N.Y. There, he played this song by Bobby Byrd, who went on to a fine career in the shadows of James Brown as one of Brown’s backup singers, the Famous Flames.
