August 6 — CULT OF PERSONALITY, Living Colour (1988)

imageA year after this song was recorded, I saw Living Colour open for the Rolling Stones at one of two sold-out shows at th Metrodome in Minneapolis. It was the Stones’ first U.S. tour in eight years, and Mick Jagger himself had discovered the band. Buzz was high and the band lived up to it. Today this song came to mind after I caught part of a new Jeff Beck song, with guitar riffs that echo Vernon Reid’s. Nearly 30 years later, the lyrics are still topical — a warning against idolatry and a reminder of FDR’s famous “we have nothing to fear but fear itself,” as today’s Republican presidential candidate tries scaring the people into voting for him.
