August 1 — I’M AN ADULT NOW, The Pursuit of Happiness (1988)

imageIn the year I published the music newspaper Stage Left, I received a promo copy of an album by a Toronto band called The Pursuit of Happiness. With catchy hooks and a raw aesthetic, and produced by Todd Rundgren, the album showed great promise. Today, 28 years after TPOH’s debut, I answered my alarm from a month-long sabbatical, showered and shaved, put on a coat and tie, and drove foggy-brained to work with Moe Berg’s anthem screaming in my ears: “Gotta get up and take on that world / When you’re an adult it’s no cliche, it’s the truth.”
