LOST IN THE NOISE

May 30 — OPEN GROUND, Jay Farrar (2003)

The soundtrack to “The Slaughter Rule” is a great example of a sound matching a mood. Spare, dark and frozen, perfect for a film set in small-town Montana. The same ambiance would work as well for the novel I just finished, “Our Souls at Night.” It’s the last book from the late Kent Haruf, a quiet telling of a late-in-life romance in a small Colorado town.
