April 24 — OH VERY YOUNG, Cat Stevens (1974)

While in traffic in the early dark, waiting to get into downtown along with 25,000 other runners, this song quietly came onto the radio. It’s been three months since my back injury. The comeback continues — I’m doing everything I’m supposed to be doing — but it’s slow. My pace is a minute to 90 seconds slower per mile than pre-injury; I’m putting two, three, four days between runs; and I continue alternating running and walking. But still. I signed up for the OKC Memorial half-marathon expecting I’d bail out around mile six, which is near our house. I made it to eight, and felt I could have gone more. But with age comes wisdom, and I don’t want to jeopardize my progress. “You’re only dancin’ on this earth for a short while.”
