April 7 — MY OWN KIND OF HAT, Rosie Flores (1994)

imageMy old friend Matt Aingell was always a bit of a purist, immensely interested in the real deal, but skeptical of any half-baked tribute. In the mid-’90s, as my interest in American roots music took full effect, we frequently got together, an armful of albums on one side, a 12-pack in the other. And this was one tribute album that met his approval, a collection of Merle Haggard covers by songwriters primarily by way of Texas and the L.A. roots-rock scene. This waltz is my favorite of the bunch.
