Today’s Rolling Stone email included an interview with R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, his first since the band “called it a day.” It’s striking how amicably the band got along for 30 years, right up to retirement. They built a steady audience over time, while maintaining their integrity. They were reliable, innovative and consistent throughout. They treated people well, played the game right and built a model career for independent bands. Quite a contrast to the ‘Mats, whose career was one long string of self-sabatoge and lost opportunities.
