LOST IN THE NOISE

February 5 — SHINING STAR, Earth Wind & Fire (1975)

imageGrowing up in a small, white town, my impression of African-Americans was shaped largely by popular culture of the day: Sammy Davis, Jr., with his shiny rings and velour red tuxedo; Mohammad Ali and his brash proclamations; Jimmie Walker and his “dyn-o-mite”; and artists like Earth, Wind & Fire, who blended disco and soul into a cool, urban concoction of grace and style. Rest in peace, Maurice White.
