Like fellow Southern novelist the late Larry Brown, Greg Iles punctuates his stories regularly with music references. If “Natchez Burning” is to be believed, everyone in the South listens to early Delta blues and plays the bottle-neck slide guitar. Unlike Brown, however, Iles’s references seem to have no relevance to the scene. In a passage I read today, a man calls his friend and hears this song playing in the background. Maybe Iles is just a fan. Ten bucks says he knows the singer and planted it as a favor.
