I was late to the Allen Toussaint party, having first heard of him after his album with Elvis Costello in remembrance of Hurricane Katrina. But his contributions go back to ’60s New Orleans soul and ’70s funk. Through the years his styles have run from rock to blues, and jazz. His sound is one of the dozens, in my mind, that encapsulate New Orleans. News came today that he died of a heart attack at age 77.
