This week I’ve begun listening to a podcast called “Jeff Boyd’s A to Z,” by the legendary producer of everyone from Nick Drake and early Pink Floyd to 10,000 Maniacs and R.E.M. Boyd does a deep dive into a different song for every letter of the alphabet. The references are wide and obscure — Russian folklore, German harmony groups, ska, early blues — and his vocal delivery has the flatness of a 1950s documentary. But there are several gems, including the unearthing of what he claims is the greatest gospel group of all time. Today after attending Pierre Choinard’s funeral in Tulsa, here is the song that the podcast dialed up.
