LOST IN THE NOISE

January 6 — WALK LIKE A MAN, Bruce Springsteen (1987)

imageThere’s a respectable buzz about the new Springsteen album. My favorite of his remains “Tunnel of Love,” and this track is the best of the bunch. It’s about a son who idolizes his father: “All I can think of is being five years old and following behind you at the beach / Tracing your footprints in the sand / Trying to walk like a man.”

This week I’m at the beach with my 78-year-old father and 2-year-old son. I have admired this song for more than 25 years, and suddenly it has new relevance for me.
