Yesterday I finished “House of Earth,” a gift from Lauren. It’s Woody Guthrie’s only novel, finished in 1947 but published just last year. Its setting is quintessential Woody: a Dust Bowl-era family, trying to make ends meet.
It’s a scene that reminds me of Nanci Griffith’s “Other Voices, Other Rooms” album, on which she covers songwriters who influenced her. This track is my favorite. It was written by Janis Ian, but like most of the album, sounds like it could have been written during the Depression.
